Five key expectations for Tanzania’s Mining Investment Conference

Dar es Salaam.  As the countdown to the International Mining Investment Conference 2024 begins, Tanzania is preparing to host a pivotal event that promises to transform its mining sector.

Running from Tuesday (November 19) to Thursday, the conference is set to offer new investment opportunities, showcase cutting-edge technologies, and foster collaboration between government and industry.

Here’s what attendees can expect from this highly anticipated event.

 A global platform for investment

Minerals Minister Mr Anthony Mavunde said in a speech shared with The BizLens on Monday, November 18, that the primary goal of the conference is to connect international investors with Tanzania’s rapidly growing mining sector.

He noted that this year’s Mining Investment Conference, which is set to bring together 1,500 stakeholders from both within Tanzania and abroad, presents an opportunity to strengthen the country’s position in the global mining industry, attract investment, and promote sustainable development for years to come.

“As excitement builds, the conference is expected to be a major step toward realizing Tanzania’s ambition to become a mining leader in Africa and beyond,” Mr Mavunde exuded his optimism.

For investors, entrepreneurs, and industry professionals, this event is a unique opportunity to engage with Tanzania’s growing mining sector and explore mutually beneficial partnerships.

For Tanzania, it’s a critical moment in its journey to unlock the full potential of its mineral wealth.

With its wealth of minerals, including gold, diamonds, tanzanite, and emerging rare earth elements, the event will showcase the country’s vast potential.

Tanzanian officials, including Minister Mavunde, will offer insights into the country’s attractive investment environment, highlighting the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance regulatory frameworks, incentives, and the overall business climate for mining capital.

Cutting-edge technology and innovation

The conference will spotlight the latest advancements in mining technology, including automated machinery, drones for surveying, and data analytics tools.

Innovations aimed at improving operational efficiency, safety, and sustainability in mining will be central themes.

Global experts will present on how these technologies are reshaping the future of mining, and what steps Tanzania can take to incorporate them into its own industry for improved productivity and environmental management.

Stronger government-industry collaboration

” A key focus of the event will be fostering closer collaboration between the Tanzanian government and private sector players,” asserted Mr Mavunde.

Officials, he expounded, will discuss the country’s regulatory policies, transparency measures, and incentives designed to support sustainable mining practices.

Dr Steven Kiruswa, Deputy Minerals Minister, will be among those engaging in high-level dialogues aimed at addressing industry concerns and strengthening the regulatory framework to build investor confidence.

Sustainable mining practices

Sustainability will be a major theme, with sessions dedicated to reducing the environmental footprint of mining activities.

Experts will discuss best practices in waste management, water usage, and rehabilitation of mining sites.

Tanzania is focused on aligning its mining practices with international environmental standards, and the conference will provide a platform to showcase the country’s commitment to sustainable development while advancing its mining capabilities.

Job creation and skills development

Beyond investment and technology, Mr Mavunde said the conference will focus on the role of mining in driving job creation and building a skilled workforce.

With the potential to create thousands of jobs in Tanzania, discussions will center on workforce development, vocational training, and aligning educational curricula with industry needs.

This focus on human capital will be crucial for empowering Tanzanians to take on skilled roles within the sector and meet the growing demands of modern mining.

Tanzania is positioning its mining sector as a central pillar of its economic growth, with the potential to drive job creation, infrastructure development, and significant export revenue.
