Kisarawe. The minister for Minerals, Mr Anthony Mavunde has commissioned a new explosives manufacturing plant owned by Solar Nitrochemicals Limited in Kisarawe District, Coast Region.
Officiating the opening ceremony on Sunday April 13, 2025, Mr Mavunde said the opening of the facility is part of broader efforts to encourage value addition and support the growth of industries that serve strategic sectors such as mining.
“Our President, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, has continued to lead efforts to open up the economy and create a favourable environment for investment. The establishment of this factory is a direct result of those efforts, and it will go a long way in supporting mining operations in the country,” he said.
He added that the government will continue to provide a secure and enabling environment for investors, recognising their role in boosting government revenue and generating employment for Tanzanians.
The minister noted that Tanzania’s annual demand for explosives stands at 26,000 tonnes and 10 million pieces.
The newly commissioned plant is projected to produce 22,000 tonnes and 15 million pieces annually, which is expected to significantly reduce the importation of such materials and boost exports to neighbouring countries.
“Local production will not only reduce costs for miners but also create jobs and enhance skills development among Tanzanians,” he said.
Solar Nitrochemicals’ Resident Director, Mr Kishor Bhomale, said the company has invested $8 million (approximately Sh19 billion) in the construction of the facility, which is intended to serve both the local and regional markets.
Kisarawe District Commissioner, Mr Petro Magoti, described the factory as a key catalyst for the area’s economic growth.
He said the district has set aside a vast area for industrial development and welcomes further investment in diverse manufacturing ventures.
The launch of the facility marks a milestone in Tanzania’s industrialisation drive and supports ongoing efforts to promote self-sufficiency in key sectors of the economy.
