Azam FC storms into CAF Confederation Cup Group stage

The result sealed a comprehensive 9–0 aggregate victory for the Tanzanian moneybags, marking a historic qualification achieved with flair, dominance, and clinical finishing

Dar es Salaam. Azam FC have advanced to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup in emphatic fashion, after thrashing Zanzibar’s KMKM 7–0 at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam.

The result sealed a comprehensive 9–0 aggregate victory for the Tanzanian moneybags, marking a historic qualification achieved with flair, dominance, and clinical finishing.

Idd Selemani ‘Nado’ opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a right-footed strike following a clever assist from Feisal Salum ‘Fei Toto’.

Just four minutes later, Jephte Kitambala doubled the lead after connecting beautifully with a cross from Nado.

Kitambala then grabbed his brace in the 29th minute, finishing off another well-threaded pass from Fei Toto to make it 3–0 before halftime.

The hosts maintained total control as referee Idris Osman from Somalia blew for the break with Azam cruising comfortably.

In the second half, KMKM made five changes bringing in Mwinyi Mwinyi, Samir Said, Martin Londo, Mukrim Hassan, and Yahya Simai but the alterations did little to stop the onslaught.

Azam continued to dominate possession and pressure, with the visitors’ defence collapsing under relentless attacks. Substitute Sopu struck twice, while Pascal Msindo added another to complete the 7–0 rout as the rain of goals continued.

Head coach Ibenge made several substitutions to give more players a taste of action, introducing Zidane Sereli, Sadio Kanouté, James Akaminko, Nathaniel Chilambo, and Nassor Saadun for Sopu, Yahya Zayd, Himid Mao, Lusajo Mwaikenda, and Kitambala respectively.

This achievement marks Azam’s first-ever qualification for the CAF group stage since the club joined the Tanzanian Premier League in 2008.

They now become the fourth Tanzanian side to reach this milestone, joining giants Yanga SC, Simba SC, and Namungo FC in the country’s continental football history.

Azam FC will now await the official group stage draw, scheduled to take place on November 3, 2025, in Johannesburg, South Africa.
