Kibaha. Tanzania’s Prime Minister, Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, has directed the ministry of Water to prioritise the completion of the Kidunda Dam project to address persistent water shortages.
The Prime Minister issued the directive on December 29, 2025 during an inspection of the Lower Ruvu water production and distribution facilities in the Coast Region.
The visit aimed to assess the capacity of existing infrastructure amid growing demand and environmental pressures.
Addressing climate challenges
Speaking after the inspection, Dr Nchemba emphasised that the government has been proactive in tackling water scarcity driven by climate change.
He noted that strategic planning for large-scale water projects began three years ago, recognising that water is an essential resource with no substitute.
“These plans to construct projects aimed at tackling water shortages began three years ago through the development of major initiatives intended to yield positive results,” the Prime Minister stated.
“The government has not been idle; it continues to implement various water projects to ensure citizens have access to clean and safe water services.”
The Kidunda Dam priority
The Kidunda Dam, located in Morogoro Region, is viewed as a critical solution to the water fluctuations affecting the Ruvu River, which serves as the primary water source for Dar es Salaam and surrounding areas.
By regulating water flow and providing storage during dry spells, the dam is expected to stabilise supply significantly.
Dr Nchemba underscored that the Ministry of Water must treat this project with urgency to mitigate the impacts of unpredictable weather patterns on the population.
His inspection reaffirmed the government’s recognition of water as a fundamental necessity for life and its strategic goal of implementing long-term infrastructure to counter climate change-induced shortages.
The Prime Minister’s visit highlighted the government’s commitment to securing water infrastructure as a cornerstone of national development and public health.
