Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has taken another significant step towards its green energy goals with the official launch of Orion Gas, a digital ordering platform designed to streamline the procurement and distribution of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for domestic use.
The application, developed by local enterprise Hygge, enables consumers to order cooking gas cylinders online and receive them directly to their doorsteps with no additional delivery charges.
The service will initially pilot in the commercial capital of Dar es Salaam before expanding nationwide, directly addressing the logistical bottlenecks that frequently hinder the adoption of cleaner household fuels.
Deputy Minister for Energy, Salome Makamba, officially unveiled the platform on June 25, 2026 during the closing ceremony of the Clean Cooking Energy Exhibition and Forum.
Held at the East African Community Logistics Centre (EACLC) in Ubungo, the forum served as a critical convergence point for policymakers, private sector executives, and international development partners.
Speaking at the event, Ms Makamba said the government, under the leadership of President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, remains firmly committed to the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy (2024–2034).

This ambitious 10-year blueprint mandates that at least 80 percent of the Tanzanian population must transition to sustainable, non-polluting cooking energy sources by 2034.
To facilitate this transition, the administration has progressively dismantled financial barriers by eliminating key taxes and duties on clean cooking equipment, a fiscal intervention that has substantially lowered entry costs for average consumers.
Ms Makamba revealed that these collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors have already yielded quantifiable success, with clean cooking energy adoption rising sharply from a mere 6.9 percent in 2021 to 28.9 percent today.
Concluding her address, Ms Makamba issued a tripartite call to action for sustaining this momentum.
She urged the private sector to aggressively scale up investments in clean technology distribution, called upon financial institutions to design affordable credit facilities for both suppliers and consumers, and tasked the media with leading national public awareness campaigns.
The overwhelming attendance at this year’s forum, she noted, proves that clean cooking has firmly established itself as a top-tier national priority.
