Young Africans (Yanga) have officially appointed highly experienced South African coach Manqoba Mngqithi as their new head coach, replacing Pedro Gonçalves ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The Tanzanian champions confirmed the appointment after reaching an agreement with the 56-year-old tactician, who has signed a one-year contract with the club.
His arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter for Yanga as they prepare for another demanding campaign both domestically and in continental competitions.
According to sources within the club, Mngqithi is expected to begin work immediately, with his first priority being the preparation of the squad for the upcoming season.
Yanga are keen to ensure the team is in top condition ahead of the new Premier League campaign as well as the CAF Champions League, where the club hopes to challenge for honours.
Mngqithi arrives at Yanga with a wealth of coaching experience and an impressive track record in South African football.
He previously enjoyed a successful spell with Mamelodi Sundowns, where he helped the club win several domestic trophies and played an important role in establishing one of the strongest teams on the continent.
Yanga’s management believes his experience, tactical knowledge and winning mentality will be crucial as the club seeks to strengthen its position as one of East Africa’s leading sides while making a greater impact in African club competitions.
The South African coach joins the Jangwani-based club from Golden Arrows, who finished sixth in last season’s South African Premiership.
Although his appointment has now been confirmed, Yanga have yet to announce when Mngqithi will arrive in Tanzania to officially begin his duties and meet his new squad.
Club officials are also expected to work closely with the new coach during the current transfer window as Yanga continue to strengthen their squad with the aim of defending their domestic titles and mounting a serious challenge in the CAF Champions League.
Before settling on Mngqithi, Yanga had been strongly linked with another South African coach, Fadlu Davids.
Negotiations between the two parties broke down after they failed to reach an agreement over contractual terms, prompting the club to pursue Mngqithi instead.
Mngqithi’s appointment is expected to generate significant excitement among Yanga supporters, who will be hoping the experienced coach can maintain the club’s dominance in Tanzanian football while delivering the long-awaited success on the continental stage.
