Tanzania highlights significant progress in SDG implementation at UN Forum

Addressing the UN forum, the minister of State in the President's Office [Planning and Investment], Prof Kitila Mkumbo, detailed the comprehensive steps taken by the government to align national development with the UN's 2030 Agenda

New York. Tanzania has officially presented its Third Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) currently taking place in New York.

Addressing the forum, the minister of State in the President’s Office [Planning and Investment], Prof Kitila Mkumbo, detailed the comprehensive steps taken by the government to align national development with the UN’s 2030 Agenda.

The national presentation highlighted substantial advancements in rural infrastructure and resource access.

Notably, access to clean and safe water in rural areas increased significantly from 72.3 percent in 2020 to 85.3 percent in 2025.

This improvement reflects targeted public investments designed to bridge the rural-urban utility gap.

Significant strides were also reported in the energy sector.

Domestic electricity access has expanded to reach 86.2 percent of the population, supported by a national power generation capacity that has more than doubled over the reporting period.

Regarding SDG 9, which focuses on industry, innovation, and infrastructure, the minister pointed to major transport upgrades.

The modernization of the railway network contributed to a dramatic surge in passenger numbers, which rose from 1.2 million to 4.1 million.

Prof Mkumbo emphasized that these achievements rely heavily on robust multi-stakeholder partnerships, aligning with SDG 17.

The preparation of the national report itself was a highly collaborative process, involving active contributions from over 824 civil society organisations and 1,000 private sector entities.

Looking ahead, the minister outlined seven priority areas designed to accelerate SDG progress.

These priorities will be integrated into the forthcoming National Development Vision 2050 and the Fourth Five-Year National Development Plan (FYDP IV).

With only four years remaining until the 2030 deadline, the presentation reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to accelerating sustainable development and strengthening international cooperation.
