Mtwara. The minister for Energy, Deogratius J. Ndejembi, has officially inaugurated the construction of a major high-voltage power transmission line connecting Masasi and Newala.
Joined by key government officials, the Mr Ndejembi laid the foundation stone and cut the ceremonial ribbon in Newala District, Mtwara Region, marking a significant milestone in regional energy infrastructure.
The newly commissioned infrastructure features a 33-kilovolt transmission line stretching 76 kilometres from the Masasi Switching Station directly to Newala District.
Financed entirely by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, the project represents a capital investment of Sh4.65 billion aimed at expanding rural and regional electrification.
The completion of this dedicated transmission route significantly enhances grid stability and addresses longstanding power reliability issues across the region.
By modernising the distribution network, the project substantially increases the capacity of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) to meet the growing energy demands of local residents, businesses, and commercial investors.
The official launch ceremony brought together senior government representatives and leaders from the Chama Cha Mapinduzi party.
Notable attendees included the Regional Commissioner for Mtwara, Colonel Donald Msengi, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy responsible for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba, the managing director of Tanesco, Mr Lazaro Twange, as well as technical experts from the ministry and its affiliated institutions.
