Dar es Salaam. As of December 2024, Tanzania has achieved an impressive 99.9 percent rural electrification rate, the Rural Energy Agency (REA) announced on Sunday, January 5, 2025.
Briefing reporters, Mr Jones Olotu, the Director of Rural Electrification at REA, confirmed that a total of 12,301 out of 12,318 villages have been successfully connected to the national electricity grid.
Mr Olotu also highlighted that only 17 villages remain without power, with contractors actively working on infrastructure in these areas.
The remaining villages are expected to be fully electrified by the end of January 2025.
Mr Olotu also revealed that, in addition to village electrification, a total of 33,657 out of 64,359 hamlets (52.3 percent) in mainland Tanzania have already received electricity.
The remaining 30,702 hamlets are included in the government’s five-year electrification plan.
Through these efforts, the government, through REA, has made significant strides in improving the lives of rural residents by providing access to electricity and creating new opportunities for investment.
This progress will be highlighted when Tanzania hosts the African Energy Leaders’ Summit from January 27-28, 2025.
The summit is expected to bring together over 1,500 participants, including Heads of State, Energy and Finance Ministers, Ambassadors, international institutions, energy investors, and researchers.
