Dar es Salaam. The government has urged importers to accelerate the clearance of goods from Dar es Salaam port to free up space for more efficiency.
The government’s call comes following substantial investments that have notably enhanced the efficiency and speed of cargo handling operations.
During a visit to the port by members of the Tanzania Business Community association on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, the Acting Director of Dar es Salaam Port, Abeid Gallus, revealed that infrastructure upgrades and service improvements have reduced the average cargo clearance time from 10 days to just 3 days.
This remarkable reduction in clearance time is expected to streamline business operations, thereby fostering quicker trade and contributing to economic growth.
The Chairman of the association, Hamisi Livembe, praised the improvements, highlighting that they have revitalised the country’s business landscape.
The enhanced efficiency has not only led to increased revenue for businesses but also provided a significant boost to the national economy, opening new avenues for growth.
DP World Relationship Manager, Elitunu Mallamia, elaborated on the port’s impressive performance, noting that in December 2024 alone, the port handled 16 vessels and 25,251 vehicles.
He noted that ongoing infrastructure enhancements are aimed at expanding the port’s capacity further, ensuring its continued competitiveness on the global stage.
The transformations at Dar es Salaam port are seen as a catalyst for the expansion of Tanzania’s business sector.
In light of these developments, the government has urged all stakeholders to maximise the opportunities presented by the improved port operations to drive the country’s national development forward.
