Kariakoo market traders list released as operations to resume

Dar es Salaam. The Kariakoo Market Corporation has announced the final list of 1,520 traders eligible to return to the Kariakoo Main Market, following a comprehensive verification process.

The announcement follows the completion of extensive repairs to the market and the construction of a smaller new facility, both funded through a government allocation of Sh29 billion.

The release of the list follows a press briefing on January 30, 2025 by Hawa Ghasia, chairperson of the Advisory Board of the Kariakoo Market Corporation, who confirmed that the verification process had been completed.

She further urged traders to complete a special registration form before being reinstated at the market.

Additionally, she emphasised that no trader will be reinstated without settling previous debts, urging those affected to make necessary payments.

As a result 366 traders who owe a combined Sh358 million to the corporation will not be allocated stalls until they clear their outstanding debts.

A statement issued on Friday, January 31, 2025, by the corporation’s head of public relations, Revocutus Kasimba, confirmed that the list of approved traders is available on the market’s website (www.kariakoomarket.co.tz) and the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG) website (www.tamisemi.go.tz).

Market to operate 24 hours

Meanwhile, Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila has announced that, starting February 22, 2025, businesses in the city—including the Kariakoo Market—will operate 24 hours a day.

He stated that preparations, including the installation of streetlights around the market area, were progressing well to facilitate this transition.

Kariakoo Market was closed in July 2021 following a devastating fire. The Government has since allocated Sh28.03 billion for reconstruction and renovations, ensuring the facility is ready for resumption of operations.
