Tanzania to hold gemstone auction in Arusha this April

Arusha. Tanzania is set to host a major gemstone auction at the Tanzania Gemmological Centre in Arusha, bringing together local and international buyers and traders.

Scheduled from April 2-8, 2025, the event is expected to attract industry stakeholders eager to trade in high-value minerals.

According to the organisers, the auction will be structured in three key phases.

The submission of minerals will take place between April 2 and 4 followed by the official mineral viewing from April 5 to 7.

The auction itself will be conducted on April 8, providing an opportunity for buyers to acquire some of Tanzania’s finest gemstones.

Tanzania is renowned for its rich mineral resources, particularly its unique blue-violet tanzanite, which is found exclusively in the country.

Other sought-after gemstones, including rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, are also expected to feature in the auction.

Arusha has long been a hub for gemstone trading, benefiting from its strategic location near major mining sites and its well-established infrastructure for gemstone evaluation and certification.

Industry experts anticipate that this year’s auction will generate significant revenue for the sector while enhancing Tanzania’s standing as a key player in the global gemstone trade.

The event is also expected to promote transparency and formalisation within the industry, aligning with the government’s broader efforts to regulate and maximise the benefits of the mineral sector.

With global demand for high-quality gemstones on the rise, the auction presents a crucial opportunity for both artisanal and large-scale miners to showcase their products to international markets.

The event is expected to attract buyers from Asia, Europe, and the United States, reflecting the growing appeal of Tanzanian gemstones in the global jewellery industry.

Stakeholders in the gemstone trade, including miners, traders, and government agencies, have been urged to participate in the auction to ensure its success and contribute to the continued growth of Tanzania’s mineral economy.
