Dar es Salaam. Retail prices for petrol and diesel have marginally decreased across the country effective Wednesday, May 7, 2025, following a drop in global prices and insurance premiums, the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura) has announced.
Kerosene prices remain unchanged nationwide, with the cap prices announced in April still in effect, according to a public notice published on Ewura’s website.
A slight appreciation of the Tanzanian shilling against the US dollar—by 1.20 percent—has also contributed to the reduction in pump prices for petrol and diesel.
The Free On Board (FOB) reference prices in the Arab Gulf market declined by 5.22 percent for petrol, 5.21 percent for diesel, and 5.08 percent for kerosene, according to the Ewura’s public notice.
The new prices set the maximum retail levels for petrol, diesel, and kerosene across mainland Tanzania.
Despite the overall decrease, rural and remote areas continue to experience slightly higher pump prices due to transportation costs.
For instance, in Bukoba, Kagera Region, petrol is now capped at Sh3,163 per litre, reflecting a 2.73 percent drop from April. In Mbeya, diesel has declined to Sh2,975 per litre, a 2.23 percent decrease. In Arusha, petrol has dropped to Sh3,032 per litre, down 2.85 percent.
Dar es Salaam records the lowest prices nationally—Sh2,947 per litre for petrol and Sh2,868 per litre for diesel.
Ewura determines fuel prices based on the cost of discharge at the ports of Dar es Salaam, Tanga, and Mtwara, factoring in FOB prices, insurance premiums, and other local charges.
The regulator has reiterated its commitment to enforcing compliance. Retailers and wholesalers must observe the new cap prices or face legal consequences.
Fuel stations are required to display current prices prominently. Consumers are encouraged to request receipts to ensure transparency.
Motorists are advised to familiarise themselves with the new price ceilings at their local fuel stations. Selling above the regulated price is a punishable offence. A free mobile service (15200#) is available for verifying current fuel prices.
