Dodoma. Tembo Nickel Corporation Ltd has formally submitted its construction timeline for the much-anticipated Kabanga Nickel Project, located in Ngara District, Kagera Region.
This marks a major step towards the commencement of operations at one of Tanzania’s most strategic mining initiatives.
The confirmation was made on Tuesday May 13, 2025 by Chief Executive Officer of Lifezone Metals, Mr Chris Showalter in a consultative meeting chaired by the minister for Minerals, Mr Anthony Mavunde,
Lifezone Metals is the parent company of Tembo Nickel, which operates in partnership with the government of Tanzania.
Unveiling of the project implementation timetable follows a government directive requiring all holders of medium and large-scale mining licences to present progress reports on their project implementations.
“The official groundbreaking ceremony for the Kabanga Nickel Project is scheduled for October 2025,” Mr Showalter said.
“In tandem with the mine’s construction, the company remains steadfast in its plans to build a domestic nickel refining facility to ensure value addition takes place within the country,” he added.
The government had earlier called upon licence holders to expedite implementation of their projects in line with the Mining Act, Cap 123, which mandates active development of licensed areas and adherence to regulatory frameworks.
Speaking during the same meeting Mr Mavunde, hailed the Kabanga Nickel initiative as a transformative undertaking expected to catalyse significant economic development and industrial progress.
“The commitment demonstrated by Tembo Nickel towards actualising this project is critical not only for the mining sector’s growth but also for the broader national economy,” said Mr Mavunde.
He underscored that all medium and large-scale mining licence holders must ensure development activities on their concessions commence without delay and in accordance with the terms of their licences.
The Kabanga Nickel Project is poised to play a pivotal role in Tanzania’s industrialisation agenda, not only through its extraction activities but also through its proposed in-country refining operations, which will elevate the country’s standing in the global battery metals supply chain.
