Tanzania confirms readiness to host CHAN 2025 tournament

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has declared its readiness to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) set to commence on August 2, 2025, with authorities affirming that preparations have reached an advanced stage and that sporting facilities are in place for the continental tournament.

The announcement was made by the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office [Policy, Parliament and Coordination], Dr Jim Yonazi, during an inspection tour of sports infrastructure in Dar es Salaam on Monday, July 21.

Dr Yonazi, who also chairs the CHAN and AFCON Permanent Secretaries’ Committee, led the team to key venues including Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Isamuhyo grounds, the Law School and Gymkhana grounds.

“We are pleased with the current state of preparations. The facilities are ready and meet international standards. Tanzania is fully prepared to host CHAN 2025,” said Dr Yonazi, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring all arrangements proceed according to plan.

He emphasised that the inspection was part of continuous monitoring to guarantee that infrastructure will be fully functional by the time of the official opening ceremony, scheduled to take place at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

On his part, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports, Mr Gerson Msigwa, called upon Tanzanians to rally behind the national team, Taifa Stars, by turning up in large numbers to support them during the tournament.

“This is a historic opportunity for Tanzania to shine on the continental stage. We urge citizens to show patriotism and unity by attending the matches and creating an atmosphere that reflects the hospitality and vibrancy of our nation,” said Mr Msigwa.

The inspection exercise was part of broader preparations for both the 2025 CHAN tournament and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Tanzania will co-host.

Officials reiterated that the government remains committed to leveraging such international sporting events to boost the country’s image and promote social and economic development through sport.

As the countdown to kick-off begins, all eyes are now on Tanzania to deliver a well-organised and memorable CHAN 2025 tournament.
