Tanzania’s Energy ministry, JICA review progress of key power projects

Among the projects reviewed were the Uganda–Tanzania Interconnection Project (UTIP), which will enable cross-border electricity trade, and the Dodoma Ring Circuit, designed to strengthen power reliability in the rapidly expanding capital city

Dodoma. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba, has held discussions with experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on the progress of ongoing energy projects financed by the agency.

The meeting, held on September 8, 2025, at the Ministry of Energy offices in Mtumba, focused on the timely and efficient implementation of key infrastructure projects as well as the transfer of technical expertise to Tanzanian professionals.

Among the projects reviewed were the Uganda–Tanzania Interconnection Project (UTIP), which will enable cross-border electricity trade, and the Dodoma Ring Circuit, designed to strengthen power reliability in the rapidly expanding capital city.

According to the ministry, the two parties also deliberated on capacity-building initiatives for engineers and technical staff from the Ministry of Energy, the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), and the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura).

The training will cover the design of natural gas distribution networks, which are critical as Tanzania scales up the use of domestic gas resources.

Mr Mramba further underscored the importance of expediting the implementation of a model natural gas distribution project in the Government City at Mtumba.

He said the initiative would demonstrate the benefits of harnessing locally discovered natural gas, particularly in providing clean energy for cooking.

He also expressed appreciation to JICA for supporting Tanzania’s energy agenda, noting that the agency’s interventions had significantly boosted energy security and spurred development, especially in Dodoma.
