Dar es Salaam. Yanga midfielder Aziz Andabwile continued his fine form for the Tanzanian giants after scoring a stunning goal on Friday, September 19, 2025, while Edmund Godfrey John also made his mark in Angola during the first-leg preliminary round of the CAF Champions League against Wiliete.
Yanga made a strong start to their continental campaign under new head coach Romain Folz, registering a commanding 3-0 victory over Wiliete, a side managed by former Azam boss Bruno Ferry, at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Belas, Angola.
In the first 45 minutes, Yanga created at least six clear chances but failed to convert them, with Prince Dube missing three golden opportunities.
Despite the missed chances, Yanga’s attacking pressure led by Mamadou Doumbia and Pacôme Zouzoua kept Wiliete pinned in their own half.
Whenever Wiliete attempted to build from midfield, Andabwile and Duke Abuya consistently won possession back, making it difficult for the Angolan side to establish rhythm in central areas.
The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute, when Andabwile intercepted a loose ball before unleashing a thunderous strike that beat goalkeeper Agostinho Calunga, giving Yanga a deserved lead.
In the 59th minute, coach Folz introduced Max Nzengeli and Edmund Godfrey John in place of Clement Mzize and Doumbia.
The substitutions paid off, with Edmund adding fresh energy to the flanks.
After narrowly missing a chance and testing the goalkeeper with a powerful effort, he finally found the net in the 72nd minute, finishing off a fine assist from Max.
Yanga sealed the game in the 81st minute, when Dube redeemed himself for earlier misses by scoring the third goal, effectively putting the tie beyond Wiliete’s reach ahead of next weekend’s return leg in Dar es Salaam.
Later substitutions saw Pacôme Zouzoua, Andabwile, and Chadrack Issaka Boka make way for Balla Moussa Conté, Mohammed Hussein ‘Tshabalala’, and Célestin Ecu.
Folz’s Tactical Changes
Coach Folz made three alterations to his starting lineup compared to the one that lifted the Community Shield against Simba on September 16.
This marked his first international fixture in charge since guiding Yanga to that domestic triumph.
The changes included:
Defense: Captain Bakari Nondo Mwamnyeto replaced Dickson Job to partner Ibrahim Hamad ‘Bacca’ at center-back.
Attack: Clement Mzize started ahead of Max Nzengeli, while Mamadou Doumbia was preferred to Mudathir Yahya in midfield.
Yanga Starting XI:
Djigui Diarra (GK); Israel Mwenda, Chadrack Issaka Boka, Bakari Mwamnyeto, Ibrahim Hamad ‘Bacca’; Aziz Andabwile, Clement Mzize, Duke Abuya, Prince Dube, Mamadou Doumbia, Pacôme Zouzoua.
