Arusha. The Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC) has successfully concluded a week-long national training on radiation safety for baggage scanner operators, marking a key milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen radiation safety across the transport and inspection sectors.
The training, held in Arusha from October 6 to 10, 2025, brought together professionals from ports, airports, and customs to enhance their competence in the safe and effective handling of radiation-emitting inspection equipment.
A total of 31 participants attended the training, including 28 from the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), one from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), one from the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA), and one from a private supplier of scanning equipment.
Over the five-day programme, participants took part in technical lectures, group discussions, and hands-on exercises designed to simulate real inspection scenarios and strengthen operational safety.
Speaking on behalf of TAEC Director General, Prof Najat Kassim, Mohammed during the closing ceremony, TAEC expert, Dr Jerome Mwimanzi, underscored the importance of continuous professional development in radiation safety.
“This training is not just a requirement, it is a responsibility. We must ensure that every operator understands the risks, the regulations, and the protective measures necessary to safeguard themselves, the public, and the environment,” he said.
The course covered a broad range of technical and regulatory topics, including the principles of radiation protection, biological effects of ionising radiation, the regulatory framework in Tanzania, safety requirements for cargo scanners, and nuclear security and illicit trafficking.
Participants also received training on maintenance, image quality assessment, and response to radiological accidents.
Participants expressed satisfaction with the training, noting its practical relevance and comprehensive coverage.
“We now understand not only how to operate the machines but also how to protect ourselves and others from the harmful effects of radiation,” said one participant from TPA.
TAEC said the successful completion of the training forms part of its broader mission to promote the safe use of radiation and the responsible application of nuclear technologies to support national development.
As Tanzania continues to upgrade its inspection infrastructure and security systems, the commission said such capacity-building programmes remain vital in enhancing safety, compliance, and public confidence.
