Tanzania empowers girls to become digital innovators

Through this initiative, the government has successfully built the technological capacity and creative potential of female secondary school students, positioning them to contribute to the country’s digital transformation and promoting gender equality in science and technology sectors

Dar es Salaam. The Tanzanian government, through the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF), continues to make remarkable progress in empowering girls to participate fully in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) studies under the Girls in ICT project.

Through this initiative, the government has successfully built the technological capacity and creative potential of female secondary school students, positioning them to contribute to the country’s digital transformation and promoting gender equality in science and technology sectors.

In the 2024/25 financial year, the project reached 246 female students from public secondary schools across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Conducted through six regional training camps held in April 2025, the programme provided participants with hands-on experience in STEM disciplines, focusing particularly on practical applications using Arduino systems and microcontrollers to develop solutions to social and economic challenges.

The training has inspired a growing sense of confidence and motivation among girls to pursue careers in technology-related fields.

By equipping young women with digital skills, the government has demonstrated its firm commitment to nurturing a new generation of digital innovators capable of driving Tanzania’s technological advancement and contributing meaningfully to an inclusive digital economy.

The Girls in ICT initiative exemplifies the government’s broader vision of creating equal opportunities for all citizens—ensuring that no one, especially girls and young women, is left behind in the fast-evolving digital landscape.
