Dar es Salaam. Deputy Minister for Energy, Salome Makamba, on Thursday, December 11, 2025, announced the full completion of the Kinyerezi I Extension power receiving and cooling station, including the installation of a new 175 MVA transformer.
She said the development marks a major step toward strengthening reliable electricity supply in Dar es Salaam—particularly in the rapidly growing areas of Mbagala and Gongolamboto, which have faced frequent outages due to rising population and expanding economic activities.
Speaking during her inspection visit to the Kinyerezi I, Kinyerezi II, Ubungo I, Ubungo II, and Ubungo III power stations, the Deputy Minister confirmed that the project has already entered the testing phase.
“We are very grateful to President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan for the significant investment. The transformers have been installed, testing is underway, and the people of Gongolamboto and Mbagala will now enjoy a more stable power supply,” said Deputy Minister Makamba.
On his part, TANESCO Managing Director, Lazaro Twange, said the utility continues to upgrade its infrastructure to meet the city’s growing electricity demand.
He highlighted that Kinyerezi has been equipped with a 175 MVA transformer, while Gongolamboto and Mbagala have each received a 120 MVA unit to accommodate increasing consumption.
Mr Twange emphasized that Dar es Salaam’s rapid population growth calls for continuous upgrades to the power network to ensure reliable service.
“The goal of the Kinyerezi I Extension was to expand transmission capacity so that the electricity generated reaches our customers at the required standards,” he noted.
