Dar es Salaam. The United Nations Secretary-General, Mr António Guterres, has reaffirmed Tanzania’s standing as a model of peace and social cohesion, while calling for a meaningful and inclusive national dialogue following incidents linked to the General Elections held on October 29, 2025.

Mr Guterres made the remarks after receiving a special message from President Samia Suluhu Hassan, delivered through Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Kombo, who led a delegation to the United Nations.

According to a statement issued on October 14, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, the UN chief described Tanzania as “a reference point for peace and social cohesion in Africa and the world,” noting that this reputation had been tested during the recent General Election.

He acknowledged the country’s resilience in preserving national unity and stability despite the challenges experienced during the polls, and expressed the United Nations’ interest in seeing Tanzania continue to remain united and serve as a positive example globally.

In his message, Mr Guterres stressed the importance of an inclusive national dialogue aimed at addressing the root causes of the violent incidents reported on election day and at putting in place durable measures to prevent a recurrence.

“The Secretary-General emphasised the need for a meaningful and inclusive national dialogue to address the underlying causes of the incidents and ensure long-term stability,” the statement said.

He also reaffirmed the United Nations’ full support for Tanzania’s ongoing efforts to consolidate peace, including assistance during and after the work of the Commission of Inquiry established to look into the events surrounding the October 29 elections.

The message from President Samia was formally handed over by Ambassador Kombo during the meeting at the UN headquarters, marking continued engagement between Tanzania and the international body on issues of peace, governance and stability.

The Ministry said the exchange reflected Tanzania’s commitment to transparency and cooperation with international partners as the country addresses post-election challenges and strengthens its democratic institutions.

Tanzania has long been viewed as one of Africa’s most stable nations, often cited for its peaceful coexistence and orderly political transitions since independence.

The events of the 2025 General Elections, however, drew regional and international attention, prompting calls for dialogue and reforms to safeguard future electoral processes.

The Commission of Inquiry, whose mandate was referenced by the UN Secretary-General, is expected to play a central role in examining the incidents and recommending measures to reinforce peace and national cohesion.

The government has maintained that it remains committed to unity, stability and constructive engagement with all stakeholders, as it works to uphold Tanzania’s image as an anchor of peace in the region.
