President Samia launches 758 telecom towers to expand connectivity

The towers are linked to the National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) and cover 85 districts

Dodoma. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has launched 758 telecommunication towers as part of a nationwide drive to expand digital connectivity.

The towers are linked to the National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) and cover 85 districts. The launch took place at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre in Dodoma.

The President also witnessed the handover of key communication infrastructure to the government.

She said the investment would strengthen the digital economy. It would also expand communication services, especially in rural and border areas.

She described connectivity as a pillar of economic growth and social service delivery.

“The world is changing rapidly. Communication is no longer a luxury but a pillar of the modern economy,” she said. She added that the project would create jobs and support innovation.

The President directed the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to connect remaining districts without delay.

She called for expansion of services to lower administrative levels. This, she said, would widen access to digital services.

She also urged local government authorities to streamline approval processes. Delays, she noted, increase costs and slow service delivery.

The President stressed the need to protect communication infrastructure. She described it as a strategic national asset for both the economy and national security.

She further directed that services should respect Tanzanian ethics, traditions and cultural values.

Minister for Communication and Information Technology Angellah Kairuki said the achievement reflects strong collaboration.

She cited partnerships between the government, private sector and development partners. She added that efforts would continue to promote innovation and support technology start-ups.

The Director General of Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTCL), Moremi Marwa, said the NICTBB has reached 121 out of 139 districts in mainland Tanzania.

He said this has strengthened both domestic and international connectivity.

Yas Tanzania Chief Executive Officer Pierre Canton-Bacara said the private sector remains committed to supporting government efforts.

He called for a review of infrastructure costs to improve competitiveness and encourage data usage.

On the sidelines of the event, the President witnessed the signing of the infrastructure handover.

She also presented awards to telecommunications firms involved in the projects.
