Simba brought an emphatic end to Yanga’s dominance in the Muungano Cup on April 29, 2026 with a dramatic and hard-fought victory, sealing their place at the top once again.
A decisive 119th-minute goal from striker Seleman Mwalimu proved to be the difference, as Simba edged past their fierce rivals with a narrow 1–0 win to lift the Muungano Cup.
The late strike not only secured the trophy but also ended Simba’s recent drought of silverware, while restoring pride and confidence within the squad.
Mwalimu, who has developed a reputation as a super-sub, once again made a telling contribution after coming off the bench.
He was introduced as early as the 26th minute, replacing Anicet Oura, who was forced off due to a thigh injury.
From that moment, Mwalimu added energy and attacking intent to Simba’s frontline.
The forward replicated his earlier performances against Mafunzo and Mlandege, where he also found the net, once again stepping up when it mattered most.
His consistency throughout the tournament underlined his importance to the team’s success.
Over the course of 90 minutes, both Simba and Yanga approached the game with caution, showing mutual respect and tactical discipline.
While there were moments of attacking promise from both sides, neither team managed to break the deadlock, with defences holding firm and goalkeepers remaining largely untroubled.
The match proceeded into 30 minutes of extra time, where fatigue began to show, yet both teams still struggled to convert their chances.
As the game edged closer to a penalty shootout, the tension inside the stadium continued to rise.
Simba eventually found their breakthrough in the 118th minute after midfielder Clatous Chama was brought down inside the penalty area by Edmund John.
The referee, Dickes Nyagrowa, had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Up stepped Mwalimu, who kept his composure under immense pressure and calmly converted the penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and sparking wild celebrations among Simba players and supporters.
That goal marked Mwalimu’s third of the tournament, bringing him level with Yanga’s Prince Dube in the scoring charts and further highlighting his impact in the competition.
With this triumph, Simba claim their seventh Muungano Cup title in history, reaffirming their status as one of the competition’s most successful clubs.
Their last victory in the tournament came in 2024, making this latest success a significant return to winning ways.
