Zanzibar. The President of Zanzibar Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has announced an increase in the minimum wage from Sh300,000 to Sh500,000 per month.
The announcement was made on May 1, 2026 during the climax of International Workers’ Day celebrations.
The event took place at the Kizimbani Agricultural Showgrounds in the Mjini Magharibi Region.
Dr Mwinyi said the new wage structure will take effect from January 2027.
He noted that the decision reflects the country’s economic conditions and the rising cost of living.
He added that the measure aims to motivate workers and improve productivity.
He said the government considered several factors before reaching the decision.
These include economic performance, labour welfare, and the need to sustain public sector reforms.
Dr Mwinyi also outlined achievements recorded under the Eighth Phase Government since 2020.
He said the administration has strengthened workers’ welfare through salary reviews and adjustments.
It has also reviewed allowances and improved employment benefits.
He further noted progress in social protection.
The government has enhanced social security benefits and introduced a health insurance scheme for all workers and their families.
In addition, the President announced that 7,500 job opportunities have been allocated for the 2026/2027 financial year.
He said the move is part of broader efforts to improve employment and strengthen labour conditions.
The announcement comes at a time when governments across the region are under pressure to address the cost of living and improve public sector pay.
