Brussels Airlines launches direct flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport

Moshi. Tanzania has marked a historic milestone in its aviation and tourism sectors following the official launch of direct flights between Brussels and Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) by Brussels Airlines.

The inaugural flight, which landed at KIA on June 3, 2026, represents the concrete implementation of the Air Services Agreement signed between the government of Tanzania and Belgium on November 3, 2021 in Dodoma.

This bilateral framework was established to enhance mutual cooperation in aviation, trade, tourism, and investment.

Speaking during the reception ceremony for the maiden flight, the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, James Millya, noted that connecting Tanzania directly to the capital of the European Union signifies a profound strengthening of diplomatic and economic relations between Tanzania, Belgium, and the wider European continent.

Mr Millya emphasised that these scheduled flights will unlock vital economic opportunities by facilitating the seamless movement of tourists, business leaders, and investors from Europe into East Africa.

Conversely, the route provides Tanzanian citizens and businesses with streamlined access to European markets through the extensive global network operated by Brussels Airlines.

Furthermore, the introduction of this direct service is projected to significantly boost international visitor numbers to Tanzania’s premier tourist destinations, including Zanzibar, the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Tarangire National Park.

Aviation officials and economic analysts anticipate that this increased connectivity will drive substantial growth in tourism revenue, generate sustainable local employment, and stimulate broader macroeconomic development across the nation.
