Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has officially handed over a state-of-the-art Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion workshop to the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).
This strategic milestone is projected to accelerate the adoption of clean energy across the nation whilst significantly enhancing technical expertise in natural gas technologies.
The official handover ceremony took place in Dar es Salaam on June 5, 2026, where TPDC was represented by the Director of Planning and Investment, Mr Derick Moshi, on behalf of the Managing Director.
Receiving the facility on behalf of the university was the Deputy Vice Chancellor of UDSM, Professor Bernadeta Kilian.
Speaking during the event, Mr Moshi emphasised that the construction of the workshop aligns with TPDC’s commitment to supporting the government’s strategic agenda of promoting affordable and clean energy alternatives for citizens.
He noted that the completion and handover of the workshop represent a critical stride in expanding CNG utility nationwide.
Beyond providing vehicle conversion services, the facility is designed to cultivate local expertise by offering practical, hands-on training to engineering students at UDSM.
The project, which incurred a total cost of TZS 1.52 billion, forms part of a broader collaborative framework between TPDC and UDSM established under a land lease agreement signed in 2022.
According to Mr Moshi, the workshop is outfitted with modern machinery capable of managing CNG system installations, rigorous safety inspections, and specialised vehicle maintenance.
This infrastructure is expected to substantially reduce running costs for motorists shifting away from conventional fuels.
Expressing her gratitude, Professor Kilian commended TPDC for fulfilling its pledge to construct and deliver the facility.
She highlighted that the new infrastructure would serve as a vital catalyst for academic advancement, specialized research, and technological innovation within the country’s energy sector.
