Yanga tighten grip on title race with comfortable victory

The Dar es Salaam giants produced a disciplined and professional performance to claim all three points in a match they largely controlled from start to finish

Defending champions Young Africans (Yanga) moved a step closer to retaining the Mainland Tanzania Premier League title after securing a convincing 2-0 victory against Mashujaa FC at Lake Tanganyika Stadium in Kigoma on Saturday, June 13, 2026.

The Dar es Salaam giants produced a disciplined and professional performance to claim all three points in a match they largely controlled from start to finish.

The victory was another statement of intent from Yanga as the race for the league crown enters a crucial stage.

Coming into the encounter under pressure to maintain their lead at the top of the standings, Yanga showed their experience and quality by dominating possession and limiting the hosts to very few clear scoring opportunities.

The visitors began brightly and looked dangerous whenever they pushed forward, with Zimbabwean striker Prince Dube causing problems for the Mashujaa defence through his movement and link-up play.

Their efforts were rewarded in the 28th minute when midfielder Mudathir Yahya broke the deadlock.

Dube produced an intelligent pass to release Yahya, who made no mistake with a clinical finish to put Yanga ahead.

The goal settled the visitors, who continued to dictate the pace of the match while frustrating the home side’s attempts to get back into the contest.

Mashujaa struggled to find spaces in the final third as Yanga’s backline remained organised and compact.

As the first half approached its conclusion, frustrations began to show among the hosts, with defender Mussa Balama receiving a yellow card in stoppage time following a challenge on a Yanga player.

Trailing 1-0 at the break, Mashujaa made changes at the start of the second half in an attempt to inject fresh energy into their performance.

However, Yanga remained composed and continued to control key areas of the pitch.

The hosts’ difficulties increased when Haji Juma was booked in the 54th minute as they struggled to contain Yanga’s attacking threats.

Despite making several substitutions, Mashujaa were unable to find a breakthrough against a well-drilled Yanga side that looked determined to leave Kigoma with maximum points.

Yanga also refreshed their squad from the bench, introducing fresh legs to maintain the intensity of their performance.

The visitors continued to create chances while remaining solid defensively whenever Mashujaa attempted to push forward.
With the game entering its final stages, Mashujaa committed more players in search of an equaliser, but that left gaps at the back which Yanga looked eager to exploit.

The champions eventually sealed the victory deep into stoppage time when defender Bakar Mwamnyeto found the back of the net in the 90th minute.

The goal effectively ended any hopes of a Mashujaa comeback and confirmed Yanga’s superiority on the day.

The result sees Yanga increase their tally to 63 points, strengthening their position at the summit of the Mainland Tanzania Premier League standings.

Their closest challengers, Simba SC, remain second with 58 points, meaning Yanga now hold a valuable five-point advantage in the title race.

With only a handful of matches remaining before the end of the season, the victory could prove significant in Yanga’s quest to successfully defend their league crown.

The performance once again highlighted the team’s balance between defensive solidity and attacking efficiency, qualities that have made them the dominant force in Tanzanian football in recent years.

For Mashujaa, the defeat represents a missed opportunity to collect points on home soil, although they can take encouragement from the fighting spirit shown against one of the strongest sides in the division.

As the campaign moves towards its conclusion, Yanga will be encouraged by their consistency and growing momentum, while Simba face increasing pressure to keep pace with their rivals in what remains an intriguing battle for the championship.

For now, however, the advantage firmly belongs to the defending champions, who continue to look determined to finish the season on top once again.
