Cristiano Ronaldo made FIFA World Cup history as Portugal cruised to a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, securing their first win of the 2026 tournament in emphatic fashion.
The veteran forward scored twice in Houston to become the first player ever to find the net in six different World Cup tournaments, further cementing his status as one of football’s greatest players.
Portugal started brightly and almost took the lead inside two minutes when Bruno Fernandes’ effort was blocked inside the penalty area.
Ronaldo then came close to connecting with a dangerous cross from Nuno Mendes before finally breaking the deadlock moments later.
The 41-year-old timed his run perfectly to meet a delivery from the right and powered a header beyond goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov, surpassing legendary Portuguese striker Eusébio as his country’s leading World Cup goalscorer.
Mendes doubled Portugal’s advantage with an intelligent free-kick that caught both Uzbekistan and the crowd by surprise, as many expected Ronaldo to take responsibility for the set-piece.
Uzbekistan briefly thought they had pulled a goal back through Aziz Ganiev’s stunning strike, but a VAR review ruled the effort out for a foul earlier in the move.
Ronaldo struck again before half-time after being released by Fernandes, calmly placing his finish into the corner to give Portugal a comfortable three-goal lead at the break.
The Portuguese captain nearly completed a first-half hat-trick, only to be denied by a goal-line clearance from Abdukodir Khusanov.
Portugal continued to dominate after the restart and added a fourth goal when Fernandes’ corner caused confusion inside the six-yard box, eventually ending up in the net via an unfortunate own goal involving Khusanov and goalkeeper Nematov.
Ronaldo was then presented with another opportunity after closing down Nematov’s clearance, but he was unable to convert what would have been his third goal of the evening.
Substitute Rafael Leão completed the scoring late on, producing a powerful finish from the edge of the area to underline Portugal’s superiority.
The defeat leaves World Cup debutants Uzbekistan facing the prospect of an early exit after conceding three or more goals in each of their group matches so far.
Fabio Cannavaro’s side may now have to rely on qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams.
For Portugal, the convincing victory provides a significant boost after their opening match and strengthens belief that Roberto Martínez’s side can emerge as genuine contenders in the latter stages of the tournament.
Above all, however, the night belonged to Ronaldo, whose latest record-breaking performance added another remarkable chapter to an extraordinary World Cup career.
