Dar es Salaam. Treasury Registrar, Mr Nehemiah Mchechu, has met with representatives of Barrick Corporation, a co-shareholder in Twiga Minerals Corporation Limited (TWIGA), and TWIGA management to discuss the progress and various issues surrounding the operations of projects managed by the company.
The meeting took place on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when a Barrick delegation visited the Office of the Treasury Registrar (OTR) in Dar es Salaam.
The Barrick delegation was led by Roelie Gey Von Pittius, Barrick’s Finance Manager for Africa and the Middle East, accompanied by Candace Simpson, Tax Manager for Africa and the Middle East; Melkiory Ngido, Barrick’s Country Manager in Tanzania; and Judith Chambua, Barrick Tanzania’s Tax Manager.
During the meeting, the government, through OTR, and Barrick, which are co-shareholders in TWIGA, discussed various issues concerning the progress and operations of gold mining projects jointly owned through TWIGA.
The projects discussed included the North Mara and Bulyanhulu mines, as well as Buzwagi, which is currently in the final stages of closure.
TWIGA management and technical experts from Barrick also participated in the meeting, providing updates and clarification on various matters concerning the progress and operations of the projects.
Speaking during the meeting, Mr Mchechu said the government, through the OTR, would continue to provide the necessary support in addressing challenges that may arise in the operation of TWIGA projects, with the aim of ensuring that the projects operate efficiently, increase production and make a greater contribution to the national economy.
He stressed that the mining sector continues to make a significant contribution to the national economy and government revenues, including through dividends generated from the government’s investments in mining companies.
Mr Mchechu said the government values its partnership with Barrick and continues to draw on the experience gained through the relationship to strengthen Tanzania’s mining sector.
“We greatly value the contribution of the kind of partnership we have with Barrick,” he said.
He said Barrick had been an important partner in the development of Tanzania’s mining sector and that the partnership had enabled the government to gain experience in managing large-scale investments in the sector.
Mr Mchechu said the government continues to consult with relevant institutions to ensure that matters relating to the company’s investment and operations are addressed effectively and with a shared understanding.
“In important matters such as these, involving a key partner in an important business, the government must speak with one voice,” he said.
He said the government seeks to create an environment that will enable investment to continue growing and deliver long-term benefits to Tanzania.
“We want to have a business that can continue operating smoothly from one generation to another and withstand different political administrations,” he said.
For his part, Mr Von Pittius said Barrick continues to value its partnership with the government and to work with relevant authorities on matters relating to its operations in the country.
Mr Von Pittius expressed the company’s commitment to continued cooperation on various matters of mutual interest to investment and the development of Tanzania’s mining sector.
Tuesday’s talks are part of the ongoing cooperation between the government and Barrick aimed at strengthening the investment environment and mining operations in Tanzania.
