Latra: Transport milestones achieved under sixth phase government

Dar es Salaam. Media editors from across Tanzania met with the Treasury Registrar and top officials from the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (Latra) over the weekend to receive updates on the authority’s achievements during four years of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration.

The session, held in Dar es Salaam, showcased Latra’s progress in strengthening the country’s land transport system and expanding access to regulatory services from February 2021 to March 2025.

Speaking during the meeting, Latra director general, Mr Habibu Suluo, said the number of transport licences issued for passenger, cargo, and rental vehicles surged from 226,201 in 2020/21 to 334,859 in 2024/25.

This marks an increase of 108,658 licences—equivalent to 48 percent growth, or an annual average of 12 percent.

In efforts to widen its footprint, Latra opened ten new satellite offices in strategic areas, raising its total office count to 37 across the country.

The offices have helped improve service delivery, resolve stakeholder disputes, and foster collaboration with institutions such as Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (Tarura) and local government authorities.

In Dar es Salaam, the Latra introduced 1,007 new daladala routes and extended services to areas such as Kisarawe, Bunju Sokoni, Buyuni Sokoni, and Kitonga—measures aimed at easing commuter burdens and stimulating peripheral development.

Additional LAtra offices have been opened in Mbezi Magufuli, Tegeta, Mbagala, Makambako, Kahama, Masasi, Ifakara, Korogwe, Same and Nzega. Preparations are under way to launch five more branches in Gongo la Mboto, Mkuranga, Chunya, Mufindi, and other locations.

Officials said the expansion of routes and establishment of new offices form part of broader government efforts to improve urban mobility, ensure regulatory oversight, and foster inclusive development in the transport sector.
