Dar es Salaam/Maputo. The Tanzanian government has delivered 500 tonnes of maize to the government of the Republic of Mozambique following severe flooding caused by heavy rains.

The humanitarian assistance was handed over on March 24, 2026 by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, on behalf of the President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The consignment arrived in the Mozambican capital, Maputo, aboard a cargo aircraft operated by Air Tanzania Company Limited.

It was received by a delegation from the Government of Mozambique led by the Minister of Planning and Development, Salim Cripton Valá.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Mr Kombo highlighted the longstanding and brotherly relations between Tanzania and Mozambique.

He noted that the ties between the two nations date back to the era of their founding leaders, Julius Kambarage Nyerere of Tanzania and Eduardo Mondlane of Mozambique.

Mr Kombo said President Samia had directed him to deliver the relief supplies as a gesture of solidarity and compassion to support those affected by the floods.

“On behalf of the Government of Tanzania, President Samia conveys her heartfelt condolences to the President of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, and to the people of Mozambique following the hardships caused by these floods,” Mr Kombo said.

He added that Tanzania remains ready to continue offering assistance to Mozambique whenever the need arises.

The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries, particularly in economic matters.

The government of Mozambique expressed sincere appreciation for the humanitarian support.

Officials said the assistance from Tanzania reflects the close friendship and enduring cooperation that exists between the two neighbouring nations.
