The Mainland Tanzania Premier League title race is set for a dramatic conclusion after Young Africans (Yanga) and Simba SC both recorded crucial victories in their Round 29 matches played on Saturday, June 27.
Yanga tightened their grip at the summit of the table with a convincing 3-0 victory over TRA United at the KMC Complex, while Simba responded with a 2-0 win against Singida Black Stars at Major General Isamuhyo Stadium in Mbweni.
The results leave Yanga on 72 points, maintaining a two-point advantage over second-placed Simba, who have 70 points, meaning the championship will be decided in the final round of the season.
Yanga were inspired by a sensational display from Okello, who scored all three goals in the 27th, 51st and 60th minutes to register the league’s latest hat-trick and hand his side another vital three points.
The hat-trick has also intensified the race for the Golden Boot, with Okello moving to 14 league goals, just one behind Azam FC midfielder Feisal Salum.
Feisal retained his place at the top of the scoring charts after netting once in Azam FC’s 2-0 victory over Coastal Union on Saturday, taking his tally to 15 league goals this season.
Simba, meanwhile, produced another disciplined performance as Elie Mpanzu broke the deadlock in the 29th minute before Anicent Oura wrapped up the victory with a second goal after the break.
The Msimbazi giants remain firmly in the hunt for the championship, but they must now rely on Yanga dropping points in the final round if they are to have any chance of lifting the trophy.
The decisive round of fixtures will be played on Tuesday, June 30, with both title contenders entering their final matches knowing exactly what is at stake.
Yanga will travel to face JKT Tanzania, while Simba will take on already relegated KMC, with both matches kicking off simultaneously to preserve the integrity of the title race.
For Yanga, victory over JKT Tanzania will guarantee the league championship regardless of Simba’s result, as they remain masters of their own destiny.
Simba, however, must first beat KMC before hoping JKT Tanzania can deny Yanga maximum points in what promises to be one of the most dramatic finishes to a Premier League season in recent years.
The race for the Golden Boot is equally poised, with Feisal Salum leading on 15 goals and Okello just one strike behind heading into the final day.
With the championship and the top scorer’s award still undecided, all attention will turn to Tuesday, June 30, when the curtain finally falls on the 2025/26 Mainland Tanzania Premier League season.
