There was no separating the sides on April 9, 2026 as Mainland Premier League giants Simba and Yanga both continued their run of draws, each recording three stalemates in their last five league matches.
The draw that Simba registered against TRA United marked their third in those five games and their sixth overall this season, compared to their rivals who have five.
Simba began the first 45 minutes pushing hard in search of an early goal, but TRA United appeared more solid defensively under the leadership of their captain, Nassry Kombo.
They deployed a crowded midfield, including Jamali Dulazi, Chanda Chewe and Ally Ng’anzi to absorb Simba’s attacking pressure.
TRA United coach Etienne Ndayiragije seemed to have a well-structured plan, with his players applying pressure to regain possession as soon as Simba advanced into the attacking half, often utilising triangular formations.
Unlike the previous five meetings between Simba and TRA, Steve Barker’s men failed to score in the first half.
TRA United sat deep and, upon winning the ball, relied on the pace of their wide players, including Ramadhan Chobwedo, to launch counter-attacks.
Simba returned in the second half determined to break down TRA’s defence.
After 14 minutes, they made a double substitution, bringing on Clatous Chama and Morice Abraham for central midfielder Alasane Kante and winger Libasse Guaye to strengthen their attack.
However, TRA United maintained their defensive discipline and appeared even more compact in the second half.
Unlike the first half, where they operated with a back four led by Kombo and Ugandan Christopher Tebandeke who troubled Seleman Mwalimu they now committed more players to defence.
Full-backs Issac Mtengwa and Valentino Nouma also performed well, though unlike in the first half where they supported attacks, they stayed deeper, making it even harder for Simba to create scoring opportunities.
In the 77th minute, Simba made another substitution, replacing Neo Maema with Inno Loemba.
Later, in the 84th minute, Shomary Kapombe and Mwalimu were substituted for David Kameta ‘Duchu’ and Hussein Mbegu.
TRA United finished the match with ten men after Nouma received a second yellow card in the 88th minute, having been booked earlier in the 82nd minute.
Simba entered the match with an impressive record against TRA United, popularly known as the “tax collectors”, having won five consecutive matches without conceding a goal since February 6, 2024.
In their first-ever meeting, Simba secured a convincing 4–0 victory over their opponents, who were then known as Tabora United.
When they met again in the return fixture on May 6, 2024 in Dar es Salaam, Simba continued their dominance with a 2–0 win, highlighting the gap in quality between the two sides at the time.
The run continued as Simba recorded 3–0 victories in the next three encounters on August 18, 2024, February 2, 2025 and March 22, 2026.
Overall, Simba remained unbeaten in all five matches, scoring a total of 15 goals an average of three per game.
Notably, in each of those wins, Simba scored early in the first half, unlike this match where the teams went into the break level.
