Dar es Salaam. Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam arrived in Tanzania on Monday June 8, 2026 for a three-day State Visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic, trade and investment relations between the two countries.
President Shanmugaratnam, who is accompanied by his spouse, Mrs Jane Ittogi, landed at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, where he was received by the minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Amb Mahmoud Thabit Kombo.
Other senior government officials present at the airport included the Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila, and the Chief Executive Officer of Air Tanzania Company Limited, Peter Ulanga.
The visit, scheduled to run till June 10, marks the first State Visit to Tanzania by a Singaporean president since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1980.
Officials said the visit represents a significant milestone in efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation and expand engagement in key economic sectors.
During his stay, President Shanmugaratnam is expected to hold official talks with his host, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, at State House in Dar es Salaam.
The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, the digital economy, port development, education, skills training, tourism and infrastructure development.
The two leaders are also expected to explore new opportunities for economic collaboration and ways of enhancing long-term partnerships between Tanzania and Singapore.
As part of the visit, President Shanmugaratnam will participate in the Tanzania-Singapore Business and Investment Forum, which is expected to bring together government officials and private sector representatives from both countries.
The forum is anticipated to promote investment opportunities and encourage greater commercial partnerships between Tanzanian and Singaporean businesses.
The Singaporean leader is also scheduled to visit Zanzibar, where he will hold talks with Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi.
Government officials said the visit is expected to open new avenues for economic cooperation and further strengthen the longstanding friendship between Tanzania and Singapore.
The visit comes as Tanzania continues to seek new international partnerships to support economic growth, attract investment and accelerate development across strategic sectors of the economy.
