Tanzania power grid stable as Tanesco pledges infrastructure upgrades after outage

The disruption was triggered by simultaneous failures in three power transmission lines alongside a malfunction in a single generation unit

Dar es Salaam. The managing director of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco), Mr Lazaro Twange, has formally apologised to citizens and customers following a major technical fault on the National Power Grid.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, June 27, 2026, resulted in widespread power outages across various regions of the country.

Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam on Sunday, June, 28 2026, Mr Twange explained that preliminary investigations during the restoration process identified concurrent faults.

The disruption was triggered by simultaneous failures in three power transmission lines alongside a malfunction in a single generation unit.

The managing director noted that the National Power Grid operates as an interconnected system linking generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure.

Consequently, a severe fault in one segment can destabilise the entire network, leading to immediate and extensive supply disruptions.

Mr Twange expressed regret for the inconvenience caused, stating that technical teams worked continuously through the night to restore the electricity supply safely and swiftly.

Despite the disruption, the overall power generation capacity remains robust.

Current production has reached approximately 4,400 megawatts, a volume that comfortably satisfies national demand.

Mr Twange urged the public to maintain confidence in the utility firm, emphasizing that ongoing investments are targeting grid resilience to mitigate future systemic risks.

Tanesco is currently executing multiple strategic initiatives to reinforce the National Grid infrastructure.

These measures focus on upgrading transmission and distribution channels to shield economic and social activities from future interruptions.

The corporation also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining transparent communication with customers and collaborating with development partners to guarantee a secure, reliable, and sustainable energy supply.
