Dar es Salaam. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has officially confirmed Ramadhan Lwamo as the Executive Secretary of the Mining Commission.
Lwamo had been serving in an acting capacity since the former Executive Secretary, Yahaya Samamba, was appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Minerals seven months ago.
The Mining Commission is a government agency that plays a pivotal role in regulating Tanzania’s mining sector and it aims at establishing itself as a hub for exploration and sustainable mining in Africa.
Its responsibilities include issuing licences for exploration, mining, processing, mineral trading and other permits under the Mining Act, Cap.123.
Additionally, the Commission manages and controls the trade of minerals, conducts valuations of all minerals produced in the country, provides mineral identification certificates, and issues permits for both export and import.
It also oversees the operations of all Minerals and Gem Houses and serves as the official provider of indicative mineral prices.
Beyond licensing and trade, the Mining Commission is tasked with ensuring mine safety, environmental management, monitoring local content requirements, and offering mineral laboratory services.
Lwamo, a seasoned mining engineer, brings extensive experience to the role. Before joining the government in 2009 he worked for Barrick Gold as a mining engineer.
Meanwhile, President Samia has also reappointed or confirmed chairpersons for four government institutions, all of whom will be serving a second term in their respective roles.
Dr Aggrey Mlimuka has been reappointed as Chairperson of the Fair Competition Commission (FCC). Professor Othman Chande Othman will continue to serve as Chairperson of the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS).
Dr Florens Turuka has been appointed as Chairperson of the Tanzania Fertiliser Company (TFC). Professor Valerian Silayo has been reappointed as Chairperson of the Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation and Rural Technology (CAMARTEC).
These appointments highlight the government’s commitment to continuity and the effective governance of key institutions in Tanzania.
