Be economic enablers, President Samia directs Judiciary, Tax tribunals

Dar es Salaam. President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania underscored the critical role of the judiciary and tax tribunals as enablers of economic activities during her address at the National Law Day celebrations on Monday, February 3, 2025.

She stated that these institutions must “administer justice fairly and promptly” to foster a conducive environment for growth and development, aligning with the nation’s new Development Vision 2050.

Speaking at the official launch of judicial activities for 2025 at Chinangali grounds, President Samia emphasized that effective judicial processes are essential for attracting investment and facilitating business operations.

“The judiciary and tax tribunals must act as enablers of economic activities,” she said, highlighting the importance of swift and equitable justice in supporting a thriving economy.

By directing the judiciary to act as an enabler of economic activities, President Samia’s vision highlights the essential link between effective legal systems and sustainable economic growth, positioning Tanzania for success as it works toward its development goals by 2050.

President Samia noted that the successful implementation of the Vision will require collaborative agreements between the government and the private sector, necessitating a robust and responsive judiciary.

Looking forward, she acknowledged that Tanzania is poised for significant growth in business and industrial activities, which will drive demand for legal services.

“As we advance, the judiciary must ensure that legal matters related to these sectors are resolved efficiently,” she urged.

Additionally, President Samia commended Chief Justice Ibrahim Juma and the judiciary for their strides in enhancing legal service delivery, including the integration of technology to improve access to justice.

She affirmed the government’s commitment to improving working conditions for judicial staff, enabling them to perform their duties effectively.

In her remarks, President Samia also addressed the need for public education regarding legal rights.

She supported the recommendations of Mr Boniface Mwabukusi, the President of the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), for fostering collaboration in legal education initiatives.

She instructed the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs and Justice to coordinate these efforts and backed the TLS’s request for resources to expand access to legal aid.

Monday’s event, themed “Tanzania 2050: The Role of Institutions Upholding Justice in Achieving the Key Goals of the National Development Vision”, aimed to showcase the judiciary’s potential impact on the nation’s economic landscape, as well as emphasize the importance of justice in supporting development and fostering collaboration among institutions.
