Fuel prices in Tanzania up by 5.5 percent

Dar es Salaam. The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura), has announced an increase in cap prices for petroleum products in Tanzania Mainland of about 5.5 percent, effective from February 5, 2025, at 12:01 AM.

A statement released by Ewura and signed by its director general Dr James A. Mwainyekule, said retail fuel prices have increased slightly due to adjustments attributed to changes in global market trends, Free on Board (FOB) prices, and exchange rate fluctuations.

The FOB reference prices used are those that prevail in the Arab Gulf market, Ewura said in the statement.

According to Ewura’s statement cap prices (FOB) for diesel have increased by 6.77 percent, kerosene by 5.87 percent and petrol by 3.82 percent.

The exchange rate has also contributed to price fluctuations, increasing by 4.77 percent, according to Ewura’s statement.

Regions with highest prices

The highest retail prices for petroleum products have been recorded in upcountry regions where transportation costs significantly impact pricing.

The regions with the most expensive fuel prices are in Kagera (Karagwe, Kyerwa), where petrol is priced at Sh3,052 per litre and diesel at Sh2,935 per litre; Rukwa (Nkasi, Kalambo), with petrol at Sh3,007 per litre and diesel at Sh2,889 per litre; as well as Mara (Tarime, Serengeti), where petrol would cost Sh2,995 per litre and diesel Sh2,877 per litre.

Conversely, the lowest retail prices are found in coastal cities and regions where bulk fuel imports arrive directly through major ports, reducing transportation and logistical costs.

Regions with lowest prices

The cheapest fuel prices are in Dar es Salaam, where petrol would be priced at Sh2,820 per litre and diesel at Sh2,703 per litre; Tanga, with petrol at Sh2,825 per litre and diesel at Sh2,749 per litre; and Coast (Kibaha), where petrol costs Sh2,825 per litre and diesel Sh2,707 per litre.

Ewura has urged customers to check and crosscheck cap prices through Ewura’s official website or by dialing *152*00# on mobile devices and then follow instructions depending the regions they are found.

The price adjustments will have varied implications for consumers and businesses across the country.

While coastal cities benefit from relatively lower prices, inland regions continue to face higher transportation and logistical costs, leading to elevated fuel prices.
