Dar es Salaam. On Friday, February 28, 2025, President Samia Suluhu Hassan marked her sixth day of her official visit to Tanga Region by announcing significant steps that seek to transform the region into a thriving industrial and tourism hub.
During her address at the fully packed Mkwakwani Sports Stadium, President Samia revealed intentions to continue easing investment conditions for both domestic and foreign investors.
The strategy, she noted, is designed to expand existing industries while establishing new ones, with the ultimate goal of driving job creation and economic growth in Tanga.
“Tanga has long been an integral part of Tanzania’s economic landscape. Now is the time to revitalise its industrial base while boosting the tourism sector,” she told a cheering crowd.
She said that the changes are part of a broader vision to restore Tanga’s industrial prominence and harness the full potential of its natural and cultural resources to drive economic development.
The President’s emphasised that the revitalisation of the region is not solely about industrial growth but also about increasing employment opportunities for youth.
In her address, she called on parents and guardians to take active steps to protect young people from the scourge of drug abuse, which she described as a destructive force threatening the future workforce of Tanzania.
“Through this plan, we aim to create more jobs for our youth. Parents must ensure their children are shielded from the dangers of drugs, which harm not only the individual but the entire community,” she said.
As part of her agenda, President Samia also shed light on her government’s commitment to enhancing tourism in the region, particularly focusing on Tanga’s pristine beaches, historical landmarks, and rich cultural heritage.
“Tanga has unique resources, such as mountains, beautiful coastlines, and a treasure trove of historical sites. These are invaluable assets that can propel the region into a leading tourism destination,” President Samia noted.
She encouraged the people of Tanga, especially the youth, to capitalise on the tourism opportunities that are beginning to emerge, urging them to pursue careers in tourism management and explore the establishment of businesses in tourism-related fields such as customs brokerage and tour operations.
“These opportunities are essential for the development of Tanga and for the prosperity of our nation. The government will work closely with local communities and the private sector to realise these ambitions,” President Samia remarked.
The President’s visit to Tanga comes at a pivotal moment for the region.
Historically, Tanga has played a crucial role in Tanzania’s economy, serving as a significant trade and industrial hub.
However, in recent years, it has faced challenges in fully utilising its potential.
By focusing on industrialisation and tourism, the government hopes to rejuvenate the region and create sustainable job opportunities for its growing youth population.
President Samia further noted that the development of Tanga as an industrial and tourism centre is vital not only for the region’s prosperity but also for the wider economic advancement of the country.
She reiterated that her government would continue to provide support to businesses, local communities, and youth, ensuring that the transformation of Tanga is inclusive and impactful.
