At last, Simba SC have officially announced the stadium that will host Yanga SC for the highly anticipated Kariakoo Derby, scheduled for Sunday, 3 May 2026.
The Tanzania Premier League Board has also approved the decision made by the home side.
Simba had faced a difficult period trying to determine the venue for this crucial fixture, one of the most closely followed matches not only in Tanzania but across the African continent.
Earlier, uncertainty surrounded the match location, with some reports suggesting that Simba might opt to use a stadium in Zanzibar, given that both they and their rivals are currently based there for the Union Cup tournament.
Benjamin Mkapa Stadium issue
Initially, Simba submitted a request to use the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. However, they encountered a significant setback following an official announcement from the league authorities.
It should be recalled that after the match between Azam and Yanga on 15 March 2026, the Secretary General, Gerson Msigwa, confirmed that the stadium had been closed to allow for renovation works.
The stadium manager also acknowledged that improvements were ongoing, although the pitch itself had not yet been affected.
This further complicated Simba’s chances of securing the venue.
Last season, Simba played their international fixtures at the New Amaan Complex, but failed to achieve positive results, a factor that led some supporters to label it an “unlucky ground” for the club.
Even this season, Yanga held Simba to a goalless draw in their first league meeting.
League Board decision
In an official statement, the Tanzania Premier League Board confirmed changes to match number 169 of the 2025/26 season between Simba and Yanga.
“The match, which was initially scheduled to be played at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, has been relocated to another venue due to ongoing maintenance work,” read the statement.
“All relevant stakeholders, including Simba SC, Yanga SC, and other Premier League partners, have been informed of the changes.
Preparations will begin immediately to ensure the fixture is played at the highest standard, in line with the stature of one of Africa’s top six leagues.”
Is the venue suitable?
The Major General Isamuhyo Stadium in Mbweni, Dar es Salaam, has been Simba’s home ground this season, while Yanga have been using the KMC Complex in Mwenge.
Given the magnitude of the Derby, questions have been raised over whether the Isamuhyo Stadium can adequately host such a high-profile encounter, particularly as it has a capacity of only around 5,000 spectators.
