Yanga reach final after knocking out Azam

The semi-final clash, played at Amaan Stadium, was an entertaining encounter that saw Yanga assert their dominance early, effectively shaping the outcome within the opening 25 minutes of the first half

Defending champions Young Africans SC (Yanga) have secured their place today, April 25, 2026 in the final of the Muungano Cup after a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Azam FC.

The semi-final clash, played at Amaan Stadium, was an entertaining encounter that saw Yanga assert their dominance early, effectively shaping the outcome within the opening 25 minutes of the first half.

Yanga made an explosive start, taking the lead in just the fifth minute.

Striker Prince Dube showed composure inside the box to finish neatly from a well-weighted assist by midfielder Allan Okello, setting the tone for what would be a lively contest.

Azam attempted to respond positively and nearly found an equaliser in the 24th minute.

Defender Fuentes Mendoza rose to the occasion but failed to direct his effort on target, with the ball drifting narrowly wide in what was a warning sign for Yanga’s defence.

However, as Azam pushed forward in search of a leveller, they were exposed at the back.

Just a minute later, Yanga capitalised on a quick transition, catching their opponents off guard.

Maxi Nzengeli doubled the advantage in the 25th minute, calmly finishing after being set up by Dube, who was proving to be influential in the attacking phase.

Despite going two goals down, Azam refused to sit back and continued to press.

Their determination nearly paid off in the 40th minute when captain Lusajo Mwaikenda met a cross with a powerful header, only to see his effort sail just over the crossbar.

Yanga went into the half-time break with a comfortable 2–0 lead, having made the most of their early chances.

The second half saw a more organised and resilient Azam side.

A tactical change in midfield, with Sadio Kanoute replacing James Akaminko, brought renewed energy and better control in the centre of the park.

Azam began to dictate possession and pushed Yanga deeper into their own half.

Their persistence was eventually rewarded in the 77th minute.

Midfielder Feisal Salum, widely known as ‘Fei Toto’, reacted quickest to a loose ball in the penalty area after Yanga’s defence failed to clear convincingly.

He struck firmly to pull one goal back and set up a tense finale.

In the closing stages, Azam pressed hard for an equaliser, committing more players forward and creating anxious moments for the Yanga defence.

Nevertheless, Yanga remained disciplined and organised at the back, managing the game well to preserve their narrow lead until the final whistle.

The victory sees Yanga advance to their second consecutive Muungano Cup final, underlining their consistency and determination to defend their title.

They will now await the winner of the second semi-final between Simba SC and Mafunzo, a match scheduled to take place at the same venue.

With this result, Yanga send a strong message to their potential final opponents, demonstrating both attacking efficiency and defensive resilience at a crucial stage of the competition.
