Manchester City beat Chelsea to win FA Cup

The victory gives Manchester City an eighth FA Cup title, drawing level with Chelsea in the competition’s all-time list

Manchester City won the FA Cup after Antoine Semenyo’s second-half goal secured a 1-0 victory over Chelsea FC in Saturday’s final at Wembley Stadium.

The result handed City their first FA Cup triumph since 2023 and delivered another major trophy for manager Pep Guardiola.

City controlled possession from the opening stages and created the better early opportunities.

Semenyo tested Chelsea’s defence with two efforts, while Omar Marmoush failed to make clean contact from another promising opening.

Chelsea attempted to threaten on the counter-attack through Joao Pedro, but City defender Abdukodir Khusanov dealt comfortably with the danger.

Erling Haaland thought he had given City the lead in the 27th minute after finishing from a Matheus Nunes pass, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

Semenyo remained City’s main attacking threat and later dragged an effort wide after beating Marc Cucurella inside the penalty area.

Guardiola introduced Rayan Cherki early in the second half in an attempt to increase City’s attacking intensity, and the substitute made an immediate impact.

Within minutes of coming on, Cherki helped create another chance for Semenyo, whose header went over the crossbar.

Chelsea improved as the match progressed, with Moises Caicedo, Wesley Fofana and Reece James pushing the team forward, but City’s defence remained organised.

The decisive moment came in the 72nd minute when Haaland cut the ball back into the area and Semenyo produced a clever backheel finish that beat goalkeeper Robert Sanchez at his near post.

Chelsea pushed for an equaliser late in the game, with Enzo Fernandez going close, but City held firm to secure the trophy.

The victory gives Manchester City an eighth FA Cup title, drawing level with Chelsea in the competition’s all-time list.

Since taking charge in 2016, Guardiola has overseen one of the most successful periods in City’s history.

Under the Spaniard, the club have won six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups and the UEFA Champions League in 2023.

City have also lifted the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and three Community Shield titles during Guardiola’s tenure, taking his total trophy haul at the club to 20.
