Dar es Salaam. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has congratulated the Serengeti Boys after the national U-17 side reached the final of the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in history.
The Tanzanian youngsters secured a famous 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Egypt in a tense semi-final played in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday night after a goalless draw in normal time.
In a statement issued by the Directorate of Presidential Communications at State House on May 29, President Samia praised the team for their determination, discipline and patriotism.
She also congratulated the Serengeti Boys for qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup to be held in Qatar in November this year.
The Head of State described the achievement as an important milestone for the development of youth football in Tanzania.
She said the success reflected the commitment, hard work and discipline shown by the players in representing the country on the international stage.
President Samia further wished the team success in the final scheduled for June 2, expressing confidence that the players would continue flying the Tanzanian flag high.
The Serengeti Boys have become one of the biggest stories of the tournament after eliminating two North African giants through penalty shoot-outs in consecutive knockout matches.
Tanzania had earlier stunned Algeria in the quarter-finals after recovering from a thrilling 3-3 draw before winning on penalties.
Against Egypt, Tanzania once again displayed composure under pressure.
The shoot-out started badly after Mbegelendi R. missed the opening penalty.
However, Yusuph, Kilendemo, Juma and Mbalasalu calmly converted their spot-kicks to keep Tanzania alive.
Egypt scored through Gamal, Abou Elezz and Evouna, but misses from Nour M. and Amr A. handed Tanzania a historic victory.
Goalkeeper Haji Abdallah also produced crucial saves during the match and the shoot-out as Tanzania booked a place in the final against Senegal.
