Brazzaville. Tanzania has successfully strengthened its public financial management and executed robust reforms within its financial sector, positionally reinforcing its domestic resource mobilisation.
Speaking at a high-level panel discussion for the launch of the African Economic Outlook 2026 report at the African Development Bank (AfDB) annual meetings, Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba outlined the strategic measures the East African nation has implemented to bolster the private sector and expand domestic revenue streams.
The panel discussion, held at the Kintele International Conference Centre in Brazzaville, provided a platform for African leaders to share economic insights.
Dr Nchemba noted that these fiscal milestones align closely with the directives of President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, who recently established a special task force to review tax systems, administration, and rates.
This initiative aims to create a more business-friendly tax collection framework while broadening the government’s revenue base.
The Prime Minister was responding to an inquiry from the session’s moderator, Dr Joy Kategekwa, the Director of Regional Coordination and Integration at the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Dr Kategekwa requested that Tanzania share its experience in public financial management, specifically highlighting how the country successfully managed to fund 70 percent of its national budget through domestic revenue.
Elaborating on this achievement, Dr Nchemba explained that Tanzania prioritised efficiency within the Tanzania Revenue Authority by modernising collection systems through digital integration.
This included the widespread deployment of Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs) and the adoption of mobile money payment platforms.
Furthermore, local government authorities were empowered to collect non-tax revenues.
Dr Nchemba emphasised that the government maintained strict prudency over every cent collected, ensuring transparent expenditure that visibly translated into tangible public development projects, thereby fostering civic trust.

On the sidelines of the launch, Dr Nchemba engaged in bilateral talks with the President of the African Development Bank, Dr Sidi Ould Tah.
The meeting took place during the 61st Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the AfDB at the Kintele Congress Centre.
The discussions focused on a wide range of development issues and strategic economic cooperation between Tanzania and the regional financial institution.
Dr Nchemba is representing President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan at the annual assembly, which convenes various African heads of government, policymakers, and development partners to deliberate on the continent’s economic trajectory, investment landscapes, and sustainable development goals.
