Mwanza. The government of Tanzania has officially launched the Mwanza Regional Emergency Operations and Communications Centre to bolster the coordination of disaster management and response operations across the region.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Mwanza Regional Commissioner, Said Mtanda, stated that the facility represents a critical instrument for the highly efficient monitoring and control of emergency incidents.
He noted that the centre enables the regional administration to closely track emergency events, gather and analyze data in real time, and significantly enhance communication channels among various disaster management stakeholders.
Mr Mtanda emphasized that the establishment ensures vital information reaches relevant authorities with the utmost speed, thereby facilitating swift and appropriate decision-making processes.
He further explained that the facility links directly to the National Emergency Operations and Communications Centre, a measure that streamlines the flow of information and strengthens cross-tier coordination between regional and national disaster management entities.
According to Mr Mtanda, this development aligns with ongoing government efforts to build an integrated disaster management framework capable of delivering rapid and effective responses to crises.
Furthermore, Mr Mtanda urged civil servants and leadership figures to utilize the training provided at the facility to build institutional capacity, share operational expertise, and foster executive solidarity, ultimately improving disaster management standards throughout Mwanza.
The Director of the Disaster Management Department within the Prime Minister’s Office [Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Coordination, and Persons with Disabilities], Brigadier General Hosea Ndagala, underscored the profound significance of the centre for both Mwanza and the nation at large.
He described the facility as a central hub for the collection, analysis, and dissemination of emergency and disaster data.
By maintaining a direct link to the national headquarters, the centre ensures timely data access to support precise and immediate executive actions.
Brigadier General Ndagala remarked that the installation allows the government to monitor diverse hazards, issue early warnings, mobilize response resources efficiently, and reinforce communication protocols among all disaster management partners.
He characterized the project as a vital investment in strengthening regional and national preparedness, adding that the regional emergency response team inaugurated alongside the centre forms the core pillar for timely disaster mitigation.
Ndagala also observed that the launch arrives at a pivotal moment, as the government continues to reinforce its early warning infrastructure in light of recent advisories from the Tanzania Meteorological Authority regarding potential adverse weather conditions, including risks associated with the El Niño phenomenon.
