Unguja. Zanzibar has officially launched its first electric public bus service, marking a significant step in the Isles’ drive to modernise urban transport and promote the use of clean energy.
President Hussein Ali Mwinyi on Thursday, July 23, 2026 inaugurated the electric buses together with the Malindi Bus Terminal, saying the project would improve public transport services, reduce environmental pollution and accelerate the transition to cleaner energy.
During the launch, Dr Mwinyi directed the Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF) to expedite the construction of modern bus terminals so that commuters can fully benefit from the new transport system.
He said supporting infrastructure was essential to ensuring the long-term success of the project.
The President said his administration would continue implementing strategic development projects across Zanzibar, including roads, water supply systems, ports, airports, hospitals and the Sports City being developed in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He also urged residents to safeguard public infrastructure and continue supporting the government’s development agenda, saying the success of such investments depended on collective responsibility.
The ceremony also featured the launch of special travel cards for students, older people and other passengers.
The cards are intended to improve access to public transport while making the new system more efficient and convenient for different categories of commuters.
The launch of the electric bus service places Zanzibar among a growing number of African cities investing in low-emission public transport as governments seek to improve mobility, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and meet environmental sustainability goals.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen the quality of public transport services as the Isles continue expanding their urban infrastructure.
