Tanzania and Angola to cement bilateral ties

Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan will embark on a three-day official visit to Angola from April 7 to 9, 2025, at the invitation of President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço.

This visit aims to enhance economic collaboration between the two nations, focusing on trade, investment, and infrastructure development, according to a statement issued on Sunday, April 6, 2025, by the Director of Presidential Communications at State House, Ms Sharifa Nyanga.

The agenda includes the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) designed to create new business opportunities and strengthen security cooperation.

Notably, President Samia has been invited by the Angolan Parliament Speaker, Ms Carolina Cerqueira, to address the assembly, marking her as the first African woman to do so—a significant milestone for gender representation in leadership.

She will also lay a wreath at the Monument of the Nation’s Founder, the late President António Agostinho Neto, and conclude her visit with a tour of the Luanda oil refinery.

Angola is the second-largest oil producer in Africa, with an economy heavily reliant on oil.

In contrast, Tanzania has significant natural gas reserves, creating opportunities for both nations to share expertise and build capacity in the oil and gas sectors.

The ties between Tanzania and Angola were established by their founding fathers, the late Julius Kambarage Nyerere and Neto, who shared a vision for Africa’s liberation.

Over the years, these relations have flourished, now encompassing sectors such as mining, the blue economy, health, education, and tourism, as outlined in the Joint Cooperation Commission.

This visit marks 19 years since a Tanzanian president last visited Angola, following the first visit by Mwalimu Nyerere and a subsequent visit in 2006 by the fourth president, Mr Jakaya Kikwete, who also addressed the Angolan Parliament as Chair of the African Union.

Overall, this visit represents a crucial opportunity for Tanzania and Angola to strengthen their bilateral relations and explore new pathways for economic collaboration that will benefit both countries.
