Kahama. The Tanzanian government has launched a helicopter equipped with modern technology for mineral exploration.
The project is in tandem with the strategy to expand deep mineral research to 50 percent of the country by 2030.
The minister for Minerals, Mr Anthony Mavunde officiated the launch that took place on February 1, 2026 at Buzwagi, Kahama.
The comprehensive survey will be conducted by Barrick Mining Company.
“Through the Mining Vision 2030: Minerals are Life and Wealth, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed us to expand deep mineral research through both government and private sector investment,” said Mavunde.
“What we are witnessing today is a clear indication that the President’s vision is being implemented effectively. We thank Barrick for supporting the government’s efforts in a tangible way,” he added.
He explained that Barrick’s survey will use helicopters to cover areas including Msalala, Nzega, Igunga, Mbogwe and Nyangh’wale, gathering critical data to guide the establishment of the new mine.
Mr Mavunde further directed that areas deemed unsuitable for large-scale mining be allocated to small-scale miners, providing guidance and curbing speculative extraction.
Earlier, Barrick Tanzania Resident Manager, Dr Melkiory Ngido, noted that since commencing operations in Tanzania in 2020, the company has invested over Sh100 billion in deep mineral exploration.
Through its three operating mines, Barrick has contributed more than Sh14 trillion to the domestic economy.
This initiative marks a significant step in the government’s drive to increase mineral research and ensure sustainable exploitation of Tanzania’s rich mineral resources.
