 Powering the future

Dar es Salaam. In the vibrant town of Arusha, nestled at the foot of Mount Meru, excitement buzzed in the air as engineers gathered at the Lemuguru substation at the end of last week.

The air was filled with anticipation as the Managing Director of Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), Mr Gissima Nyamo-Hanga, prepared to address the crowd.

“Strengthening our power grid with Kenya will enhance electricity availability in East Africa,” Mr Nyamo-Hanga, announced, his voice steady and confident.

The assembly listened intently, knowing that the future of energy in their region depended on the successful integration of electrical systems.

The Lemuguru substation was a cornerstone of this initiative, designed to connect Tanzania’s national grid with the Eastern African Power Pool (EAPP).

As Mr Nyamo-Hanga explained, this integration would not only stabilize electricity supply, but also open doors for cross-border electricity trade among the 13 member countries of the EAPP.

“To our engineers,” he urged, “as you work on connecting our grids, ensure that this process does not disrupt our existing supply. Our people rely on this energy every day.”

“The future is bright,” he declared at a community celebration, “not just for us, but for all of East Africa. Together, we are not just connecting grids; we are connecting lives.”

With this vision, Tanzania was not only powering its own future but lighting the way for neighboring countries, creating a ripple effect of progress across the region.
