Dar es Salaam. The Tanzanian government and the United Kingdom have committed to enhancing their collaboration in the mining sector, focusing on capacity building, knowledge exchange, value addition, and investment in research.
This partnership aims to strengthen the mining industry, expand the value chain, create jobs, and contribute to national economic growth.
This commitment was highlighted on Tuesday by the Minister for Minerals, Mr Anthony Mavunde, during a meeting with the UK Ambassador to Tanzania, Ms Marianne Young, at the Ministry’s offices in Dar es Salaam.
“First and foremost, Ambassador Young visited to introduce herself, as she is new to the country. We also discussed the significant partnership between Tanzania and the UK,” Mr Mavunde stated.
During their discussions, both countries agreed on the importance of building capacity for their citizens and sharing experiences, particularly through collaboration between the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST) and the British Geological Survey (BGS).
This partnership aims to equip Tanzanians with the necessary skills for the development of the mining sector.
Another key topic was the strategic minerals sector, where the UK expressed its readiness to collaborate with Tanzania throughout the entire value addition chain.
Tanzania is positioning itself to attract substantial investment for the construction of mineral processing facilities within the country.
“It is now a critical time to ensure that strategic minerals benefit Tanzanians and the nation. That is why we have developed a special strategy to implement this vision, especially considering the high global demand for these minerals,” Mr Mavunde underscored.
He noted that they are in the final stages of completing this essential strategy, which is part of a global campaign to reduce carbon emissions through the use of clean energy.
In her remarks, Ambassador Young praised the efforts made by the Tanzanian government under President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan to enhance the mining sector.
She pledged to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, especially in knowledge exchange and capacity building through mining institutions in both the UK and Tanzania.
Ambassador Young expressed her support for the initiative to add value to minerals in the country, promising that the UK would collaborate closely with Tanzania to achieve these goals.
With this partnership, both nations aim to harness the potential of Tanzania’s mineral resources for sustainable development, ultimately benefiting the Tanzanian people and contributing to the country’s economic progress.
